Us Border
Ethnography at the Border by Pablo Vila, For cultural theorists, "the border" has proven a fluid and hybrid space profitably explored for new ideas about identity, gender, and ethnicity. But for those who occupy this region, the border is not merely a metaphor, but a lived experience, yielding immediate, often pressing ambiguities, problems, and perils. Focusing on a particular area of the U.S.-Mexico border, Ciudad Juarez-El Paso, Ethnography at the Border brings out the complexity of the border experience through the voices of the diverse people who inhabit the region. In a series of ethnographic essays that investigate specific aspects of border existence, the contributors provide rich and detailed insights into such topics as life in illegal subdivisions, called colonias, in Texas; the experience of actually crossing the bridge between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez; the impact of Operation Blockade on illegal crossings; the controversy surrounding El Paso Border Patrol's proposal for a border wall in Sunland Park; the paradoxes of making "American products" using Mexican workers; and the relevance of grassroots efforts, environmental problems, and the multiple meanings of "Mexican." The final chapter offers a critique of the all too metaphorical border often depicted by cultural studies. Painstakingly conveying how the border looks and feels to those on both sides, Ethnography at the Border transmutes statistics on migration, labor markets, and economic trends--as well as conceptualizations of cross-cultural identities--into the experience, the observations, and the troubling lessons of border life.
Border Women: Writing from La Frontera by Debra A. Castillo, It is a peculiar fact that U.S.-Mexico border theory is dominated by those who write about, not from, the border. By looking at the work of women writers from both sides of the border, Debra A. Castillo and Maria-Socorro Tabuenca Cordoba open border studies to a truly transnational analysis while bringing questions of gender to the fore. Border Women rethinks border theory by emphasizing women writers whose work -- in Spanish, English, or a mixture of the two languages -- calls into question accepted notions of border identities. These writers include those who are already well recognized internationally (Helena Maria Viramontes, Sheila and Sandra Ortiz Taylor, and Maria Novato); those who have become part of the Chicano canon (Norma Cantu, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, and Demetria Martinez); along with some of the lesser-known, yet most exciting, women's voices from the Mexican border (Rosario Sanmiguel, Rosina Conde, and Regina Swain).

GDR border system - The GDR border system was formed by a series of chain-link fences, walls, turrets and mine fields that was in place from 1961 to 1990, and was 1381 km (858 miles) in length, the entire length of the border separating East (the German Democratic Republic, or GDR) and West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany, or FRG). The more famous Berlin Wall, which separated East and West Berlin, was merely part of the much longer "inner-German border" or "German- ...
